"Well, it's all settled!" exclaimed Uncle Wiggily Longears, the rabbit gentleman, one day, as he hopped up the steps of his hollow stump bungalow where Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy, his muskrat lady housekeeper, was fanning herself with a cabbage leaf tied to her tail. "It's all settled." "What is?" asked Miss Fuzzy Wuzzy. "You don't mean to tell me anything has happened to you?" and she looked quite anxious.

The stories, themselves, are fairly formulaic. (Garis wrote some 1700 of them, daily but for weekends, for the New Haven Register.) Uncle Wiggily is introduced (and often reintroduced.) Characters from previous books or stories are also introduced and reintroduced, so the child who is old enough to follow can keep track of who is in view. The Bunny Uncle goes out to do something, often whimsical (to find his fortune, searching in holes and the grass, to get something from the store, etc) and either gets into trouble or finds someone in trouble and helps them. Often, they return in later stories to help him. This is not adult literature and it is definitely not PC-filtered. Bad creatures are called bad. Good and kind ones are called good and kind. The bad ones often get additional labels (Skillery-skalery Alligator). If you believe your child will flourish with PC input only, don't read these to them.
What makes these such good bed time stories is the rhythm of early 20th C. narrative in the hands of a master. One chapter is often enough to settle my 2-year-old from "I'm too tired to lie down" to "I'm ready to sleep" (or "I'm asleep"!) For this, they are intended, and they hit the mark every time, even if Uncle Wiggily is in deep trouble!

Uncle Wiggily in the Woods Howard Roger Garis 9781515020233 Books Reviews
So if the playful kitten doesn't drop a shiny new penny down the duckling's back, I'll read another story of Uncle Wiggly's adventures.
There are two books in the Uncle Wiggly Series with this cover and I bought both of them. Unfortunately I seem to have gotten no copy of Uncle Wiggly in the Woods and two copies of Uncle Wiggly's Adventures ... and I was careful as to what I ordered. I wonder if this happened to anyone else.
My father read Uncle Wiggily to me every night before I could read. When I was able to read on my own I read the complete works on my own and read the last one when I was in the third grade when my brother was being born. I attribute all A's in grammar school to Uncle Wiggilly because I never read anything else. It wasn't until my first year in college that I picked Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. The first story was "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut." I finally met an author who knew what it was all about.
Please read Uncle Wiggily to your kids. You can't go wrong.
This purchase is for Grandma. Loved these stories as a kid and can love them all over again now. Since it is on my , I can read them to/with my grandchildren.
I loved discovering these all over again. I'm in my 40s and remember my mom reading them to me. My daughter has now discovered them and enjoyed reading the stories I once tried to tell her from heart when she was little.
